Gaetano Pollastri
Violin maker
(1886 – 1960)
Bolognese violin maker Gaetano Pollastri followed the models developed by his brother Augusto, with whom he worked from a young age. After Augusto died in 1927, Gaetano opened his workshop and began to sign his own instruments, inheriting a significant portion of his late brother's customers. In his final 33 years as a maker, Gaetano was impressively prolific, and made around 165 instruments, though numerous false labels began to appear even during his lifetime. In his later years the details of Gaetano's work strayed from his brother's example, though the model remained the same. Channeling is more shallow, and corners are somewhat more narrow and elongated. Varnish is spirit-based and reddish-brown to orange-brown in color. Pollastri used his own printed label from 1927-34, the brothers' handwritten coat-of-arms label after 1935, and the same rooster brand used by Augusto.
