Martin Diehl I
Violin maker
(1741 – 1793)
Martin Diehl was the son of soldier and musician Alexander Diehl. He studied under his father-in-law Nicolaus Döpfer. Later, he worked for Karl Joseph Helmer in Prague. His work, reminiscent of Klotz, varied in quality. His fairly prolific output included many cellos, which were characterized by large, upright soundholes, and double basses with a viol outline. A small viola, dated 1776, featured a narrow form with small corners and thin yellow varnish.
