Carl Friedrich Pfretzschner I
Violin maker
(1743 – 1798)
Carl Friedrich Pfretzschner was admitted to the guild of violin makers in 1765. He was a distinguished maker of the Saxon school and a prolific craftsman. His instruments featured a High Stainer model with elegant Amatisé edges and purfling, while the scroll also exhibited proportions reminiscent of Cremona. He used fine materials and applied a good honey-gold varnish. Some examples included decorative elements such as extra purfling or inlays of ebony or ivory. Although labels often indicated Cremona, this was without any factual basis. Some instruments were branded within a heart-shaped purfling cartouche on the upper back with the initials 'C. F. P. '.
