Baltazar Dankwart I
Violin maker
(c. 1550 – 1622)
Baltazar Dankwart served at the royal court of King Zygmunt III (1587-1632). Although not widely recognized today, he was an important and prolific early maker and founder of a family of violin makers in Wilno, Krakow, and Warsaw, according to historical records such as those from the Chapel of Radziwill in Warsaw. His instruments exhibited a Brescian appearance, and many have likely been relabelled as such. They featured long, wide-set soundholes with small pointed wings and full arching. The outline tended toward an apex at both the top and bottom, with shallow open middle bouts and small corners. The varnish was thinly applied and had a dark golden color. One instrument is housed in the museum of Poznan, bearing the manuscript label: Baltazar Dankwart / we Wilnie Anno 1602 / Jego Krol. Mosci Sluga.
