Antonio Pedrinelli
Violin maker
(1781 – 1854)
Antonio Pedrinelli was a prolific maker known for models and copies of many classical Italian makers. His work was produced in various grades, featuring different levels of finish and materials. Some pieces utilized poor beech for the backs and broad grained coarse pine for the fronts, while others were crafted from finely figured maple and good straight grained spruce. The varnish was red to orange-brown, exhibiting good texture and consistency. He often left a gap in the purfling beneath the button on the back to maintain strength in the neck foot area. Scrolls were generally rather weak. He created fine cellos and double basses and was awarded a gold medal in Venice in 1854.
