Pietro Pallotta
Violin maker
(c. 1755 – c. 1830)
Pietro Pallotta was active in Turin and Perugia in the late 18th to early 19th centuries. He created personal models characterized by full arching, medium height, and strong edge flute, with long soundholes that were widely set and occasionally slanted. His volute was relatively small and neatly cut, and while he used locally sourced materials that varied, they were generally plain. The varnish ranged from golden-yellow to dark chocolate brown. Pallotta is recognized as one of the best Umbrian makers of his time, producing violins and violas with careful craftsmanship, including small f-holes and rounded eyes on boldly-carved scrolls. He was also the teacher of Giovanni Rossi, with whom he later collaborated.
