Walter Ewing Colton
Violin maker
(1846 – 1913)
Walter Ewing Colton was a violinist and a self-taught amateur maker in New York around 1880. He was influenced by George Gemunder. He completed about 50 instruments of very high quality, crafted in the style of Vuillaume and Gemunder. He presented Ole Bull with a copy of his Gasparo da Salò violin, which was rather frighteningly made from the wood of a 1743 Gabrielli bass, according to Vannes. Vannes further stated that Gabrielli himself had taken the wood from a joist of the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Florence.
