Giuseppe Ornati
Violin maker
(1887 – 1965)
Giuseppe Ornati was the son of Carlo, an amateur luthier. He studied under C. Moneta in Milan starting in 1901 and worked for L. Bisiach from 1903, alongside Gaetano Sgarabotto, Georg Ullmann, and Ferdinando Garimberti. He established himself independently in Milan around 1920 while maintaining his relationship with Bisiach and training his sons. Ornati was appointed luthier to the La Scala opera house and served as a teacher at the Cremona International School of Violin Making from 1961 to 1963. He received gold medals in Rome in 1920 and 1923, as well as in Milan in 1924. His fine, elegant workmanship was evident in both classical and personal models, characterized by fluent and distinctive purfling. He crafted many plucked instruments, using both oil and spirit varnish, typically in clear golden- or red-brown hues, and signed his work internally on the upper block as Giuseppe Ornati / fece in Milano anno 1926 G. O. M.
