David Robert Buchanan
Violin maker
(1912 – 1999)
David Robert Buchanan was a pupil of G. Wulme-Hudson in Palmer's Green, London. He was active from the late 1920s, initially using dark brown varnish for his early work. During the Second World War, he served in the RAF and continued to craft instruments with any available woods. Some labels from this period referenced the Western Desert. After the war, he relocated to Lechlade, Gloucestershire, where he continued making violins and violas. Many of his instruments featured a grafted neck, a split and matched scroll, idiosyncratic yet neatly cut purfling, and very fine materials. In the early 1960s, he moved to Eynsham, near Oxford, where he persisted in making violins and violas, often incorporating magnificent one-piece backs. His varnishes achieved a brilliant translucency. He continued to create instruments until his death.
