Fritz Baumgartner I
Violin maker
(1891 – 1975)
Fritz Baumgartner trained as a watch-maker. He later apprenticed as a violin maker to A. Meinel in Basel. After traveling abroad, he returned to Basel to work for Paul Meinel. In 1920, he established his own shop at 28 Steingraben. He suffered from ill-health starting in 1950 and retired in 1962, leaving the business to his son, Fritz (II). He was an excellent maker, known for accurate Stradivari and Guarneri models. His varnish ranged from yellow to red-brown over a pale gold ground. Over 300 violins, violas, and cellos remained extant, along with various historical and modern plucked and bowed instruments. He produced 320 bows, including Voirin copies marked only beneath the frog, while others were branded 'F. BAUMGARTNER BASEL' Baumgartner, Basel / fecit anno 19..
