François-Jacques Barbé
Violin maker
(b. 1797)
François-Jacques Barbé worked in Dijon and Avallon from around 1810 to 1850. Henley regarded Jacques and François as distinct makers (father and son) in the first edition of Vannes. His work included well-regarded double basses and flat-modelled violins derived from Stradivari, and he also created plucked instruments. Barbé used a soft amber-coloured varnish, and his instruments were branded as `Barbé d'Avallon'. A manuscript label read: François Barbé / luthier breveté de la société / mélophile d'Avallon / Dijon
