Dezsö Bárány
Violin maker
(1871 – 1942)
Said to be the most talented of the Pilat pupils. He worked in Vienna for Thomas Zach and Joseph Hamberger Jr., in Berlin for Karl Ferenczy-Tomasovsky and then in Budapest for Tanczer, Lutz, Pilat, Remenyi and Magyorossy. It is likely that he supervised the workshop of Pilat for some time.
In 1920 the American art dealer Fred Chaminer set up a counterfeiter's workshop in Budapest for Barany under the name Dezso Barany & Co. Here he faked the work of lesser-known Italian makers.
