Johann Anton Gedler
Violin maker
(1720 – 1790)
Johann Anton Gedler was the son of Norbert Gedler, who died young. He was brought up and trained by Sympertus Niggel. He worked in Füssen from around 1752. His workmanship was decent on a Stradivari-derived model featuring thin dull varnish in various shades of brown. Many of his instruments were made on a strange and distinctive model with 'pie-crust' edges; all lines of the body, soundholes, and scroll had a rippled contour. This design was quite disturbing to the eye, but it displayed undeniable craftsmanship.
