Calvin Baker worked for A. W. White and later became the chief repairer at Thompson & Odell. He was active in Boston from 1870 to the 1880s and produced over 500 instruments, many branded "C. BAKER" under the button. His work included Stradivari and Amati models, as well as a personal model with a broad pattern and long corners. He used various varnishes, sometimes shaded from red to golden brown, and employed American timbers. An example of his work is labeled: Baker & Abbott, 1873. He also worked in Weymouth, Pennsylvania, around 1876. His brand appeared on the button, with purfling stopped on either side of the brand: 'C. Baker.'
