Johann Stübiger
Violin maker
–
Johann Stübiger trained with his uncle Adam Stiibinger. He worked for Lutz starting in 1883 and for Zach from 1885, both in Vienna. He established himself independently in Bösendorferstrasse in 1891. In 1896, he was appointed luthier to the Opera. His early work closely followed the style of Zach, but after 1910, he developed a more personal interpretation of classical models. He created fine copies of Stradivari using his own high-quality prepared varnish. In 1923, he was awarded first prize in Vienna, which was seen as fitting recognition as the best maker in the city at that time.
