Franz Simon
Violin maker
–
Franz Simon made a citizen of Salzburg in 1791 and was appointed luthier to the court. His work featured a Klotz model with narrow, outwardly projecting corners. The purfling was neat and very narrow at the edge. He created exaggerated Stainer-type soundholes, although a cello illustrated in Hamma appeared rather Neapolitan with fine Stradivarian soundholes. The scroll was well-carved, showcasing a large open throat and a small concentric volute. The varnish was dark, hard, and chippy. Five violins and a viola were in the Museum of Salzburg. He also made viols and plucked instruments. Some instruments were branded internally: TS.
