Johann Georg (János György) Leeb II
Violin maker
(1740 – 1813)
Johann Georg (János György) Leeb was the son and successor of Johann Georg Leeb (I), active from c. 1779 to 1810. He became one of the most significant and influential makers of the Hungarian school. His models were generally Amatisé and personal, with his own being flat-arched and resembling Bergonzi. The workmanship was accurate, and fine wood was used for the fronts, although the maple was typically of very ordinary quality. The instruments varied in grades, and the varnish ranged from thin dark and almost opaque to fine red-brown, albeit quite thin in texture.
