William Baker
Violin maker
(1671 – 1683)
William Baker was a significant early English maker, recognized for a collection of violins, violas, and at least one cello that still existed. A viola remained at the Oxford Music School until the early 20th century. Early accounts also recorded viols. His work showed Brescian influence, resembling that of Urquhart. The small viola featured double purfling and a very full arch, while the violins had single purfling.
