Nicolas-Eugéne Simoutre worked as the son and pupil of Nicholas Simoutre. He was employed by Darche in Paris in 1852 and by Roth and Schwartz in Strasbourg from 1856 to 1860. He established his own business in place du Dôme, Strasbourg, before relocating to Basle in 1860. He also operated a shop in Mulhouse but moved his business to Paris around 1890, first at 38 rue de l'Echiquier and later at 21 ...Read More Faubourg Poissonière. He received a diploma of honour at the Basle Exhibition in 1877 and at Zurich in 1883. A prolific and inventive maker, he produced violins, violas, cellos, and double basses. His work was characterized by good accuracy on classical Italian models, predominantly using Stradivari patterns with shaded red varnish, which he described as being colored with 'sulphuric ether... gamboge, dragon's blood, °deans, and sandalwood. ' He made his own 'improvements' to the soundpost and bass bar.
