Son of leading 17th-century Milanese violin maker Giovanni Grancino, Giovanni Battista assisted his father in his successful workshop on the Contrada Larga, and was probably responsible for much of its output by the end of the century. Sadly a quarrel with rival violin maker Antonio Maria Lavazza resulted in the fatal stabbing of Lavazza, after which Giovanna Battista was sentenced to death in 1708. ...Read More He escaped execution by going into hiding and was eventually pardoned, but by then the family workshop had been sold and his reputation was ruined.
