Giovanni Georgio Taningard
Violin maker
(c. 1665 – c. 1717)
Giovanni Georgio Taningard was a pupil and son-in-law of A. Platner. He established himself independently in 1695, occupying the workshop of the lute maker Antonio Giauna near the Oratorio della Caravita. He was recorded there until 1714, when Michele Toiler took over the premises. His workmanship closely resembled that of David Tecchler, resulting in many of his original labels being replaced by counterfeit Tecchler tickets, which deprived him of his rightful status as one of the definitive makers of the Roman school. He produced violins and particularly cellos with a broad aspect and very fine modeling. His instruments featured broadly spaced and upright Amatise soundholes. The scrolls were somewhat unrefined, with a shortened final turn, contrasting with the extended spiral typical of Tecchler. He used a fine, richly colored red-brown varnish.
