Pietro Valentino (Marco) Novello
Violin maker
(fl. 1759 – 1831)
Pietro Valentino (Marco) Novello apprenticed to Giorgio Serafin in the workshop known as 'Alla Cremona' around 1773 and remained there after Giorgio's death in 1779, when A. Bellosio took over the business. He succeeded Bellosio in 1793, married Bellosio's widow Margherita, and was appointed legal agent for the 'Alla Cremona' shop. In 1799, he finally obtained full ownership. Several craftsmen worked there, including Marco Cerin and Novello's step-son Giovanni Bellosio, who were employed until 1796. He also assumed the contract as luthier to the Pieta Hospital from the Bellosio family. It appears that he used the name 'Marco' in several documents, leading previous writers to speculate about the existence of both Marco and Marco Antonio Novello as separate luthiers, presumed to be brothers of Pietro Valentino; this now seems very doubtful. His work featured a full rounded arch with marked edge fluting, was not finely finished but utilized excellent materials, and had a deep red-brown varnish.
