Matteo Bente
Violin maker
(b. c. 1578)
Matteo Bente arrived in Brescia around 1634, when his workshop was first recorded in the Contrada S. Antonio. He was noted as a violin and cittern maker from 1637 to 1661, which was after the plague that ended Maggini's life. His work was typically Brescian in style, though it varied in form and quality. Reliable examples were rare, with one used by Tartini and another by Ole Bull. He produced a large model with soundholes set very low on the table and a fine reflective varnish in golden-brown colors. The manuscript label read: Matteo Bente / fecit Bresiae 16..
