Antonio Ungarini
Violin maker
(1696 – 1771)
Antonio Ungarini created eccentric work characterized by a rather inelegant outline featuring short corners and a very full but low arching. The corners were short and broad, following the Brescian manner. He incorporated very long, narrow, and deeply cut nicks to the soundholes, with lower finials shaped in a strong transverse oval form. A diminutive scroll adorned the long pegbox, which had a very open throat. The varnish was fine, exhibiting good color and texture, ranging from amber to red-brown; however, at least one cello was noted to have painted purfling and yellow spirit varnish.
