Violin maker
(1819 – 1887)
Joseph Neff trained as a piano maker in Germany. He emigrated to the USA in 1840, initially settling in New York before establishing himself as a piano maker in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He became a violin maker around 1850. He won prizes at the 1850 Franklin Institute competition and the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. His instruments featured an Amati-derived model, stained wood with a shaded finish, and fine local maple.
