Martin Kaiser I
Violin maker
(1642 – 1695)
Martin Kaiser was the nephew of Matthias. He resided in his uncle's home in Venice starting in 1653. He was recorded as a violin maker at his marriage in 1661. A 7/8 sized cello, dated 1679, is in the Musical Instruments Museum, Brussels. It features fine work on a well-regulated model with a medium arch and is notable for its pierced and ornate rose on the upper table. The soundholes are fully developed, low set, and outswinging, and it has a fine delicate red-brown varnish. Two violins were also recorded, one dated 1685 in the collection of the Querini Stampella Foundation, Venice. Both violins exhibit Amati form and refined workmanship, closely resembling the style of his pupil M. Gofriller. The manuscript label reads: Martinus Kaiser Venetii / Anno 1685.
