Frederick Ewald Haenel trained in Saxony, Germany, and began working in 1918. He emigrated to Winnipeg, Canada, around 1938, later moving to Toronto, then Buffalo, New York. From approximately 1940, he worked in New Haven and Boston until he ceased making new instruments in 1960. One notable instrument he crafted was a very fine viola, a copy of Gaspar da Salò, which was recognized for its authentic style and workmanship, featuring a thin golden-yellow varnish
