John Alfred Gould
Violin maker
(1866 – 1944)
John Alfred Gould trained in Liverpool with W. F. Archer. He emigrated to Hamilton, Canada in 1884 and was awarded a diploma at the Hamilton Industrial Exhibition that same year. From 1885, he was employed by Orin Weeman in Boston. In 1889, he established his own workshop there, later assisted by four sons, and the business became known as J. A. Gould & Sons. Instruments were made in Rome, Maine during the summer months, featuring Cremonese and personal models. He extensively used local American woods with fine oil varnish.
