August Martin Gemünder
Violin maker
(1862 – 1928)
August Martin Gemünder, son of August Martin Ludwig, assisted his father from 1875 and took over the August Gemünder firm with his brother Rudolph upon their father's retirement in 1890. He was the creator of the "Gemünder Art Violins" and published 'The Violin World' journal starting in 1892. Gemünder gained first prize for a quartet of instruments at the Columbia Exposition (Chicago World's Fair) in 1893. His work involved classical Cremonese and Brescian models with shaded varnish, employing an original approach to construction and acoustical factors. It was reputed that he used wood sourced from old buildings in New York, although his materials were generally of very good quality. After 1905, he evolved his own personal model, incorporating the best features of various models, and bows were made based on good French patterns.
