Giovanni Gagliano I
Violin maker
(1761 – 1825)
Giovanni Gagliano, son of Nicolò Gagliano, initially worked with his brothers Giuseppe and Antonio before developing a distinctive style of his own. He faced challenges due to the relatively inferior quality of varnish used during his time, which often had a slightly greenish tint from the dark stained ground beneath. Some of his instruments featured inlaid decoration reminiscent of Stradivari. Additionally, an extra label with a religious dedication was commonly affixed to the inner surface of the upper rib, with inscriptions such as Joannes Gagliano / Nepos Januari, fecit / Neapoli 18.. and Joannes Gagliani fecit sub Disciplina / Januari Gagliani Neapoli 18..
