Gregor Ferdinand Wenger
Violin maker

Gregor Ferdinand Wenger was active in Augsburg from 1701, when he married the widow of J. Fichtl. He was one of the better makers of the Augsburg school. The model was a full-arched Tyrolean style with a narrow edge and purfling. Soundholes were broadly cut, and the scroll resembled that of Albani. The varnish ranged from light gold to dark brown, being fairly insubstantial yet transparent. Carved animal or human heads were frequently encountered. He also produced violas, cellos, and various plucked instruments. Labels with posthumous dates are known, presumably completed by assistants.
