Silverio Ortega
Violin maker
(1765 – 1846)
Silverio Ortega was a pupil of Dom Vicenzo Ascensio and succeeded him as pithier to the Spanish court. He was unfortunately best known for his involvement in the cutting down of the 'Spanish Bass', the Stradivari cello made for the court in 1696. His own work was very distinguished, typically featuring a flat arch on a personal yet well-conceived model. Stradivarian soundholes displayed a slight inward slope. The pegbox was rather straight with a shallow recurve to the chin. The volute was neatly cut but included a small chamfer, with some exhibiting a blackened chamfer in the manner of Stradivari. His varnish was fine, golden-orange, and thinly applied.
