Antonio Mariani
Violin maker
(1640 – 1680)
Antonio Mariani often received comparisons to Brescian work, which frequently featured double purfling and decorative purfling designs, although no direct connection could be established. The decorative inlays appeared rather crude and unimaginative. The scrolls exhibited unconventional flutings and volutes, with the central ridge broadening into a flat triangular shape at the front of the scroll. The model was neat yet unsophisticated, characterized by narrow corners and similarly small wings at the soundholes. Materials were generally very plain, and the dark oxidized brown varnish was of good quality but did not approach the standards of contemporary Cremonese or Brescian recipes. His production was somewhat confusing, as many instruments had been converted into 'faux Brescians, ' while others remained unidentified and inconsistent. Very few instruments retained authentic labels, and the name was also applied to factory instruments in the 19th century.
