Earsel Vivian Atchley
Violin maker
(b. 1906)
Earsel Vivian Atchley trained as an engineer under his grandfather Edward Atchley before starting a violin business in Kansas City in 1948. He created Stradivari and Guarneri models, along with copies of individual master instruments. A potassium silicate sealer was used inside and out, along with his own preparation of oil varnish, which was shaded and antiqued. He was credited with over 350 instruments, including violins, violas, cellos, basses, and some guitars, often made as quartets; these featured his family coat-of-arms emblazoned on the back.
