Claude Joseph Fonclause
Bow maker
(1799 – 1862)
Claude Joseph Fonclause was a bow maker who was presumed to be a pupil of É. Pajeot and was active in Paris from around 1832. He disputed claims made in most earlier sources regarding any significant working relationship with Lupot in Paris. His early work featured a distinctive brand entirely in the Pajeot style. He joined J. B. Vuillaume and remained there until 1840, when he established his own business on rue Pagevin, near J. Henry. He continued to produce work for Vuillaume and possibly for Simon around 1852-1853. His last period bows were in the Pecatte style, often featuring a small brand. He created very fine bows, typically with a round stick, branded in either large or small type: FONCLAUSE.
