Antonio Vinaccia

Antonio Vinaccia was the son, pupil, and assistant of Gennaro Vinaccia. He established himself independently in via Constantii from 1756, but evidence from known labels indicated that he returned to his father's workshop in rua Catalana around 1770. He was chiefly recognized for mandolins, although some impressive violins were also known. His distinctive model featured slightly pointed upper and lower bouts, with narrow soundholes that leaned slightly outward. The purfling was typically skimpy Neapolitan. The scroll resembled Eberle's work, accompanied by a long Gagliano-like pegbox and a volute that appeared slightly Tyrolean. The wood used varied in quality. His varnish was characteristic of Naples, having a slightly hard texture, dark golden-brown color, and a greenish-yellow underlayer.
