Vincenzo Rugeri
Violin maker
(1663 – 1719)
Vincenzo Rugeri was born in 1663 just outside the walls of Cremona. He worked in his father Francesco's shop alongside his brothers Giovanni Battista, Giacinto and Carlo. The shop was well positioned to handle the high demand for instruments in the period between the primes of the Amati and Stradivari workshops. Following their father's smaller cello design, they constructed an impressive number of fine cellos in particular.
Vincenzo opened his own shop in the heart of Cremona by 1690, where his main output consisted of many violins along with some cellos and a handful of violas, many of which have been erroneously attributed to Francesco. He attained significant financial success and the quality of his instruments is remarkable. He may have been assisted by his elder brother, Giovanni Battista, who lived in the same street in Cremona.
Two of sons Vincenzo's, Francesco and Carlo Giuseppe, were listed as violin makers by trade, but no known instruments bearing their labels survive.
