William Walton was a retired stationmaster and a self-taught violin and bow maker who began in 1887. He established himself professionally in 1922. His personal model, derived from Stradivari and Guarneri, exhibited careful workmanship. He used his own amber oil varnish, which featured red-brown shades over a yellow ground. The bows were not branded or marked in any distinctive manner.
