William Walker
–
William Walker was a hairdresser and self-taught violin maker. He produced over 200 instruments based on Stradivari and Guarneri models by reading Heron-Allen Violin Making. His work was of a professional standard and featured a distinctive scroll modeled on Bergonzi, characterized by a wide projecting eye and a narrow first turn of the volute. He used fine materials and applied a rich orange to red-brown varnish. Although he initially used commercial varnishes for his early work, he later developed his own copal oil recipe colored with alizarine pigments.
