Walter Plain
(d. 1879)
Walter Plain apprenticed as a cabinet maker in Edinburgh. He possibly trained under his neighbor in Brunswick Street, Robert Ballantyne, whose work resembled his own. He was active in Glasgow starting in 1840. His fine work featured classical styles. While a few cellos are known, he was a prolific maker of violins. His later use of shaded and antiqued varnish may have resulted from his involvement with the well-known dealer David Laurie. He died in the Glasgow poorhouse. He branded his work internally: `Plain / Glasw. ' Walter Plain Glasgow, 1857 Walter Plain / Brunswick Place / Glasgow / 1862.
