Thomas Perry was an Irishman by birth, but is thought to have been related to the French violin maker Claude Pierray. He followed in the footsteps of his father, also a violin maker, and took over his shop in Dublin around 1766. He worked independently until around 1781, when he went into partnership with William Wilkinson, ...Read More forming the firm of Perry and Wilkinson. His output, which was quite prolific, included viols and zithers in addition to bowed instruments, and the shop employed several assistants. While Perry died in 1818, violins bearing the label "Perry and Wilkinson" persisted until at least 1828. Perry's independent instruments and those for the firm are branded to the button with a number, but these numbers probably do not reflect the exact quantity of his output.
