Bernard Johan Wutzelhoffer
Violin maker
(1789 – 1861)
Bernard Johan Wutzelhoffer was the son and pupil of Sebastian Wutzelhoffer (II). He worked as a journeyman for I. A. Wild before taking over the family business in Mecove ulici, Brno in 1807. He became a citizen of Brno in 1809. From 1832 to 1835, he received assistance from A. Arlow. Between 1812 and 1822, he utilized the patterns of Wild, later adopting the c. 1690 'long pattern' Stradivari as his model, and ultimately using the Stradivari 1725 'Wilhelmj' violin. His work was well crafted, featuring a scroll with characteristically large prominent eyes. It was not entirely graceful, but he used good materials and varnish.
