Cornelis Weel
(1809 – 1871)
Cornelis Weel was a linen merchant and a violin maker in Utrecht from 1854 to 1868. His work featured fine Italianate characteristics, loosely based on an Amati model, yet very individual. The violins had fine open soundholes, and although the scroll was somewhat crude, the varnish and materials were of the best quality. His creations were rare. In 1868, he declared bankruptcy and returned to his previous occupation as a cloth merchant.
