Louis Otto
(1844 – 1920)
Louis Otto was the son and pupil of Johann Karl August Otto. From 1865 to 1866, he worked with his cousin Ludwig in Cologne. He subsequently collaborated with A. Reichers in Hanover. He established himself independently in Düsseldorf on Schfitzenstrasse starting in 1872. He was appointed luthier to the court and was credited with approximately 300 violins, 50 violas, 50 cellos, and several double basses. Initially, he built instruments based on Amati models, but later he adopted Stradivari and Guarneri patterns. His workmanship was very fine, and he used materials and varnish of good quality. He received awards at Düsseldorf, Melbourne, and Chicago.
