Jacob Voll
Violin maker
(1803 – 1854)
Jacob Voll was initially self-taught. He later gained experience in a commercial violin making company before moving to Vienna and Paris. At that time, the Diehl brothers dominated Mainz, prompting him to relocate to Frankfurt to establish his own business, as Steininger had left that city for St Petersburg in 1835. However, violin labels from Mainz are recorded from 1836, and he married there in 1840. He retired from violin making in 1842 to become a railway overseer, possibly due to the crisis following the early death of his wife in 1843. His work featured very fine and accurately finished craftsmanship based on a well-observed Stradivari model. He created a beautifully concentric and well-balanced scroll in Stradivarian style, though the chamfer was a little weak. His violins utilized fine orange- or red-brown varnish and first-class materials.
