Lawrence Cocker
Bow maker / Violin maker
(1908 – 1982)
Lawrence Cocker was a self-taught, ingenious, and innovative maker of violins and bows, highly respected and admired by colleagues in the English violin trade. In 1949, he received a Diploma of Honour at The Hague. He initially began using commercial Millington varnish but later created his own cooked copal recipe with a deep rust-brown tint. He was closely involved with Lionel Tertis in the development of the 'Tertis Model' viola, a large pattern that did not maintain general interest. His violins were very well made, featuring charming evolutions of classical models, resulting in well-proportioned and attractive instruments. He developed the 'split cane' bow, adapting techniques from fishing rod making as an alternative to pernambuco wood. These bows were greatly appreciated by students before cheaper composite materials became widely used by the end of the 20th century.
