Joseph Anthony Chanot
Violin maker
(1865 – 1936)
Joseph Anthony Chanot, the youngest son, pupil, and successor of Georges Chanot (II), collaborated with the Dolmetsch family in the pioneering revival of the viol. He produced over 150 violins and an equally large number of bows between 1881 and 1912, although his production slowed significantly in later years due to restoration, repair, and business dealings. Chanot struggled to maintain the family business amid intense competition from W. E. Hill & Sons. He was known for fine reproductions of the Guarneri del Gesù 'Sainton' violin, and his bows typically featured light-colored sticks branded: J. A. CHANOT.
