Alfredo Contino
Violin maker
(1890 – c. 1963)
Alfredo Contino was a pupil of Vincenzo Postiglione from 1902 and succeeded to the business in 1916. He was best known for his very precise copies of work from the Gagliano family. Over 300 violins, 15 violas, and 70 cellos were completed by him. His instruments were usually treated with potassium bichromate ground, which gave a greenish hue beneath the varnish. He received a gold medal at Padua in 1932. His branding appeared as 'A. Contino Napoli' on the back button and lower rib. Additionally, he inscribed the interior of the front with initials and a drawn device known as the 'Jettatura'.
