José Contreras I
Violin maker
(c. 1710 – c. 1780)
José Contreras was the greatest Spanish violin maker, known as 'Il Grenadino. ' He worked in Madrid from around 1740 and was strongly influenced by Stradivari, whose instruments were becoming recognized in the Spanish court at that time. However, his style differed significantly from Stradivari's own, exhibiting an impromptu feeling in both finish and technique. The outline was quite variable, generally broad and flat-arched, featuring a very good quality rich light golden-brown varnish. He had a good reputation for powerful tone and presence. Cellos were rare, and no violas were recorded. Matriti per Granadensem / Josephum Contreras /Anno 1760.
