Johann Ulrich Eberle
Violin maker
(1699 – 1768)
Johann Ulrich Eberle was a pupil of Thomas Edlinger (III) in Prague and established his own workshop in 1727. Recognized as one of the finest makers of the Prague school, he followed the Stainer model while occasionally incorporating elements from Cremona. His instruments featured Tyrolean characteristics, including a swan-necked pegbox and an extended final turn of the volute, with bodies and arching forms that sometimes reflected Cremonese styles. Eberle's instruments had small edges, short corners, and finely cut upright soundholes of Stainer form. He consistently used fine materials and employed a red-brown soft oil varnish that tended to craquelure. In addition to violins, he also made viola d'amores, violas, and cellos. His labels included "Joannes Udalricus Eberle / fecit Pragae 1767" and "Joan. Udalricus Eberil, / fecit Pragae. 1744"
